He Is #1 - review in The New York Times

The eight members of the Malawi Mouse Boys mostly make a living selling barbecued mice-on-a-stick to passing travelers in Malawi, one of the world’s poorest countries. Their guitars and percussion are handmade from scraps of wood and metal. But the songs on their album “He Is #1” (Independent Records Ltd./Proper Music) are insistently hopeful: devout, robust African gospel. In their music echoes of hymns have been Africanized; a hearty lead voice is soon joined and answered by precise choral harmonies. The songs, in the local language Chichewa or in English, are three-chord praises. Unfortunately the booklet translates only their titles (like “He Is Good” and “Going With Jesus”). The guitars don’t stay in tune, but the voices do. They’re remarkably steady and resolute, filled with spirit
